Karl Carstens
born in Bremen on 14.12.1914, died in Meckenheim on 30.5.1992
A lawyer by profession, Carstens was Bremen's envoy to the federal government from 1949 to 1954, then worked at the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs until 1966, from 1960 as Under-Secretary. He transferred to the Defence Ministry as Under-Secretary in 1967 and became head of the Chancellor's office under Federal Chancellor Kiesinger in 1968/69. From 1972 until he was elected Federal President in 1979, Carstens was a CDU Deputy in the Bundestag and President of the Bundestag from 1976.
