Rudolf Hammerschmidt left Westphalia in 1876 to expand his father's linen and
cotton trading business in St. Petersburg. He returned as a successful businessman
in 1901 and settled in Bonn with his family. He acquired an extensive art collection
which he used to decorate his villa on the Rhine.
