Leopold Koenig

born 13.11.1821 in St. Petersburg, died 17.12.1903 in St. Petersburg
Koenig purchased his first sugar factory in St. Petersburg in 1848. Fifteen years later, he dominated the sugar market in Russia. In 1867, he and his wife moved to Bonn with two of their sons (one of whom was Alexander). Koenig bought the Villa Troost, which became the Villa Hammerschmidt in 1899, and commissioned Otto Penner to redesign it. The family lived here until the mid-1880s. During this period, Leopold Koenig expanded his sugar business in the Ukraine on a large scale.
