Federal President

The Federal President is the Head of State of the Federal Republic of Germany. He is elected by the Federal Assembly, which consists of Members of the Bundestag and an equal number of members elected by the Land parliaments according to the system of proportional representation.
Past Federal Presidents have been
Theodor Heuss (FDP) from 1949 to 1959,
Heinrich Lübke (CDU) from 1959 to 1969,
Gustav Heinemann (SPD) from 1969 to 1974,
Walter Scheel (FDP) from 1974 to 1979,
Karl Carstens (CDU) from 1979 to 1984,
Richard von Weizsäcker (CDU) from 1984 to 1994,
Roman Herzog (CDU) from 1994 to 1999,
Johannes Rau (SPD) from 1999 to 2004 and
Horst Köhler (CDU) from 2004 to 2010.
His successor is Christian Wulff (CDU) since July 2010.
