Walter Scheel

born in Solingen on 8.7.1919
From 1950 to 1953 Scheel was a Landtag Deputy in North Rhine-Westphalia, from 1953 to 1974 an FDP Deputy in the Bundestag. In the Adenauer and Erhard Cabinets he assumed the post of Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation from 1961 to 1966. He was Federal Foreign Minister and Vice-Chancellor in both Brandt Cabinets from 1969 to 1974. The Federal Convention elected him Federal President in 1974. He remained in office until 1979.
