Richard von Weizsäcker

born in Stuttgart on 20.4.1920
After completing his law studies, von Weizsäcker worked in industry from 1950 to 1966. He was President of the German Evangelical Church Congress from 1962 to 1970. He was elected to the Bundestag as a CDU Deputy in 1969 and remained there until 1981. From 1981 to 1984 he was Governing Mayor of Berlin. In 1984 the Federal Convention elected him as the 6th Federal President. His speech marking the 40th anniversary of Germany's capitulation on 8 May 1945 was exemplary in its responsible treatment of the country's National Socialist past. He was re-elected in 1989. From 1994 onwards, a large part of his official duties were conducted from Berlin.
