Erich Ollenhauer

born 27.3.1901 in Magdeburg, died 14.12.1963 in Bonn
Elected to the SPD executive in 1933, Ollenhauer went into exile the same year. After his return, he was deputy chairman of the SPD from 1949 to 1952 and deputy chairman of the parliamentary party in the Bundestag from 1949. In 1952 he became chairman of both the SPD and the parliamentary party. The trained businessman did much to convert the SPD from a workers' party into a broad-based people's party. Ollenhauer, who had already promoted cooperation between various socialist groups during his time in exile, was elected chairman of the Socialist International in 1963.
