Rudolf Scharping

born 2.12.1947 in Niederelbert
Scharping, who has been a member of the SPD executive since 1988, was Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate from 1991 to 1994. The political science graduate subsequently assumed the position of chairman of the parliamentary party in the Bundestag. He was party chairman of the SPD from 1993 to 1995. Scharping was Federal Minister of Defence in the re-elected Red-Green coalition government from 1998 to July 2000.
