Kurt Schumacher
born in Culm/West Prussia on 13.10.1895, died in Bonn on 20.8.1952
Schumacher was an SPD Deputy in the Reichstag from 1930 to 1933. He was arrested by the Nazis shortly after the SPD was banned. He was imprisoned in various concentration camps until 1943 when he was released as a seriously ill man. Schumacher began rebuilding the SPD immediately after British troops marched into Hanover. He was elected party chairman by delegates at the first post-war party conference in 1946. From 1949 until his death, he was leader of the opposition in the Bundestag and a fierce opponent of the politics of Konrad Adenauer.
