Hans-Jochen Vogel
born 3.2.1926 in Göttingen
Vogel, who started an administrative career as a law graduate, was Mayor of Munich
from 1960 to 1972. A member of the SPD federal executive since 1970, Vogel failed
in his bid to become Chancellor as the SPD candidate in the 1983 Bundestag
elections. He assumed the post of chairman of the parliamentary party the same
year and was elected party chairman in 1987. He resigned from both positions in
1991.
